Augsburg

Augsburg is a very impressive city, especially given its current size (it’s a UNESCO World Heritage city). However, when you get to know its history, it is no wonder that you can see clear glimpses of its former past. The town goes back to the Roman times but it became especially powerful in the 16th century, as a banking centre. The Fugger banking family, especially, was extremely powerful and played a central part in royal power games. One very interesting site in Augsburg is the Fuggerei, a social housing project created by the Fugger family and dating back to the 16th century!

In September we went again and this time we went around more and also visited Schaezlerpalais, a former residence of the Liebert banking family. The Rococo ballroom is quite interesting though it is very much over-the-top richly decorated. The palace also has a nice collection of paintings.
