Blutenburg

We visited Blutenburg in August 2021. Located quite close to Munich, this is a small palace in a quite nice location. Blutenburg was created in the 15th century by Duke Albrecht III on the site of an older moated castle. It is here that Albrecht III lived with Agnes Bernauer and later, after Agnes was drowned in Danube by the Duke’s father in 1435 , with his second wife Anna von Braunschweig. Later, his son Sigismund lived here after his abdication in 1467. From 1508 the castle served as a hunting lodge. After many other owners and uses, the castle was almost ruined by 1976. The Association of Friends of Schloss Blutenburg started extensive renovation works from 1980 to 1983. It currently houses the International Youth Library.

There are two interesting sculptures in the grounds: the one created in 2013 by Joseph Michael Neustifter, inspired by the love story between Duke Albrecht III and Agnes Bernauer, and called ‘A memorial for love’; the other one created by Hubertus von Pilgrim and dedicated to the victims of the death march from the Dachau concentration camp.

From Blutenburg we also walked to Pasing along the Würm stream and then we came back. On the way, we also admired an art project by the street artist Martin Blumöhr.
