Berlin 2018

Recently we spent a few days in Berlin. During these days, we visited Potsdam, the Tiergarten, the Bundestag building, the Museum Island, Charlottenburg and other places around Berlin. The visit to the Bundestag was indeed memorable. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is really beautiful and symbolic and definitely worth visiting.

One of the highlights of this visit was to see a concert at the Berliner Philarmonie, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

The Bundestag Building

The original building dates was built between 1884 and 1894 and it was designed by Paul Wallot. The building was severely damaged in the 1933 fire and during the WWII. After its modernisation in the 1960s was used to host various events. From 1995 to 1999 the building was redesigned by Lord Norman Foster in order to accommodate the German Parliament (Bundestag) after its move from Bonn to Berlin.

Charlottenburg

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Built as an imposing church with five spires by Wilhelm II in honour of his grandfather, Wilhelm I, between 1891 and 1895. The church was badly damaged during the WWII and, after the war, the Allies decided to not rebuild it, so it was left as a ruin. Saved by public protests from being totally demolished, it became part of a new modern church designed by Egon Eiermann, and it was completed between 1959 and 1961.
